Overview
Initially, The Why Republic was approached to design a set of communication cards for the extended Arawhata communication library. However, recognizing the potential for greater impact, a comprehensive visual identity system was proposed. This system incorporated all the essential elements of a cohesive brand identity, enabling the creation of versatile templates and marketing collateral far beyond the original card designs.

Project Background

Project Arawhata aims to create a shared language between Māori knowledge (mātauranga) and Western science in geothermal energy by developing meaningful new kupu (words) in te reo Māori. The goal was to design a communications toolkit that supports learning and use of these terms across diverse audiences, including scientists, Māori communities, and educators.

Originally tasked with designing simple communication cards, the project expanded into a full visual identity system. This system provides flexible templates and branding for print, digital, and social media, ensuring consistent and culturally respectful communication of the new geothermal vocabulary.

The design balances scientific clarity with cultural authenticity, reflecting the collaborative spirit of Arawhata and promoting greater engagement within the geothermal community.
